A conversation with Dr. Rahuldeep Singh Gill

The story that began my public teaching journey.

Rahul was a Sikh scholar, professor of religion, interfaith leader, and someone deeply committed to justice, compassion, and helping people understand one another across traditions. This conversation took place while I was teaching at The Tree Yoga Cooperative in South Los Angeles. It became the first time I publicly shared the journey that would eventually lead to Mental Yoga and Maat Wellness.

In this documentary, I reflect on growing up in South Central Los Angeles, becoming involved in gang life, and the path that eventually led me to yoga. More than a story about leaving the streets, it is a story about searching for purpose, healing, and discovering a different way to live.

Rahul passed away in 2021, and I now see this conversation as both the beginning of my public teaching journey and a tribute to a friend who believed deeply in dialogue, humanity, and the power of spiritual understanding.

I hope his questions and my story inspire you to reflect on your own journey.

Dharma: Practice, Purpose, and Community

Over the last fifteen years, hundreds of students have described remarkably consistent experiences with Ja’s teaching. They do not simply talk about learning yoga. They describe being supported, challenged, seen, prepared, and invited into a deeper relationship with practice, community, and purpose.
